Magazine Double Page Spread Analysis
In my last post i talked about characteristics of contents pages and after comparing and analyzing numerous magazine versions i found out what i felt to be the most successful layouts and techniques used and how every magazine one way or another abide by the rules of what works and what is pleasing to the human eye, and when looking at double page spreads i came to the same conclusion to the point where almost every double page spread is a somewhat of a beautified version of the basic layout which clearly seems to work, again, the large use of celebrities and people on the upper corners of the page usually on the left since thats where the eye goes to, the use of black, white and red, and sometimes blue and pink tones as well as neutrals, and an overall the best double page spreads are the ones that are aesthetically pleasing, artistically unique and pull the reader and viewer in, whether you're there for the articles or the photography,
the key features of what i found to be the most successful after analyzing top magazines:
- bold headings
- the more exciting quotes where the eye is drawn to naturally (upper corners)
-main image and important things on the upper corners for best impact
-smaller images along the top or the side
- an exciting introduction
- "Drop caps" which is when the first letter is bigger and in a bright color which guides the reader to where the article starts,
- captions on the images
- and extras on upcoming things to keep the reader interested in future releases for this magazine
-when the two pages work together to create a harmonious unit
- bottom parts of the double page spread is where least important things go, the things you don't want the viewer to focus on, such as credits and ads
-harmonious text flow
-when the ad and the magazine content has contrast for the viewer to distinguish between them,
-sometimes its better to stick to a simpler layout then do something different just for the sake of it,
